The city’s fitness center is reopening with limited access, but the COVID-19 pandemic is prompting Moraine to cancel many spring and summer events, including its Fourth of July fireworks festivities.

Moraine has announced it is scrapping its Independence Day Star Spangled Boom at Wax Park this year, joining the list of cities canceling Fourth of July fireworks events due to the coronavirus.

The event has included amusement rides, a fun zone, food trucks and a concert at 4 p.m. followed by a free concert.

Dayton, Fairborn and Kettering had earlier said they will also not put on fireworks events due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Fireworks displays are still planned in Huber Heights, Lebanon, Springboro and Xenia, officials have said. But Lebanon will cancel its Independence Day activities at Colonial Park, according to the city.

Beavercreek officials have said the city has not made a decision on its fireworks. The city’s website continues to provide information on a “Happy 40th Birthday, Beavercreek!” themed event.

In Moraine on Monday, fitness facilities in the Payne Recreation Center will reopen with limited hours and access. Public access will be for current pass holders, with no drop-ins during the initial reopening, according to the city.

Weight rooms, cardio rooms and restrooms will be accessible. Members must practice social distancing guidelines and are encouraged to wear a mask when entering the building, the city said.

The gym, indoor track, and aerobics, meeting, childcare and locker rooms will be off limits. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the city. It will be closed on Sundays.

Moraine has also canceled some upcoming events and is keeping closed other locations.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta and the Bike Trail Clean-ups will not occur, according to the city. Meanwhile, the Gerhardt Civic Center, playgrounds, shelter houses and the skate park remain closed, the city said.
