A man who escaped from adult probation services on Saturday is back in custody, and his mother is now facing an obstruction charge.

Charles R. Sturgill III, 38, allegedly punched a security guard and stole a white 2013 Chevy Express, a Montgomery County Adult Probation Services van, according to the Dayton police report.

The incident happened early Saturday afternoon while Sturgill was with a group of four inmates on a work detail in the 1900 block of South Gettysburg Avenue, according to the report.

The guard told police that Sturgill apologized before he punched him in the face and pushed him out of the driver’s seat of the van, according to the report. The guard did not have any visible facial injuries and refused medical treatment.

Police said the other three inmates exited the van and Sturgill sped away going north.

Sturgill, who is on probation following a 2012 aggravated burglary conviction, should not have been on a work detail to begin with because he had been talking about going to see his children and was considered a flight risk, according to the report.

Officers tracked Sturgill down to the 1000 block of Highland Avenue, where he was sitting in a Toyota Rav4 with his mother, 55-year-old Kathleen Sturgill, according to the report.

Police said Charles Sturgill ran when the officer approached the vehicle, but he was quickly apprehended and put in handcuffs.

Police said Kathleen Sturgill had been advised earlier to call police if her son made contact with her. If she didn’t she would be charged with obstructing official business, according to the report.

The county van was eventually recovered undamaged with the keys in the ignition.

The mother and son were booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Kathleen Sturgill was released by Sunday morning. Charles Sturgill remains an inmate on suspicion of escape, robbery, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
