New audiobooks make debut at Washington-Centerville library

Audiobook listeners will carry fewer CDs under a new MP3 format soon available at the Washington-Centerville Public Library.

Beginning in March, the library will be the first in Montgomery County to offer the new format MP3 CD audiobooks, which decompress the size of the audio file without sacrificing sound quality. The library system says a 12-disc standard CD audiobook could fit on one MP3 CD.

MP3 CDs can be transferred to iTunes or Windows Media Player for listening on a smartphone or other device, although standard CD players will not play the new format. MP3-enabled CD players are included in newer cars, DVD or Blu-ray players and video gaming systems.

Audiobooks at the library are available also on traditional CD, Playaways and digital audiobook providers, such as Overdrive and Hoopla.
