Work bringing lane closures and detours on Ohio 741 in Miamisburg near the Dayton Mall is expected to last for months.

The construction, which started Monday, is part of a $3.4 million Ohio Department of Transportation project spanning the city limits north of Ohio 725 and affects traffic at one of the busiest intersections in the Dayton area.

The Ohio 741/725 area is a key jobs, business, entertainment and shopping corridor for both the city and Miami Twp. The Miamisburg strip of Ohio 741 is about a mile long.

Currently, orange barrels are closing the northbound right lane of Ohio 741 in Miamisburg with signs indicating partial road shutdowns and detours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

“They’re trying to do the majority of that work at night,” Miamisburg City Manager Keith Johnson said.

“Unfortunately, it is creating some traffic issues out there,” he added. “So if you can avoid the area, avoid it. But as always, when you’re are driving in (construction) areas, please make sure that you’re leery of the workers out there.”

The intersection of the state routes – which ODOT data shows handles more than 24,000 vehicles daily - has routinely been congested since the start of the work.

Ohio 725 eastbound drivers turning north on Ohio 741 commonly have found themselves backed up into the intersection, creating further slowdowns.

The project is expected to last into the fall, according to the city.

The plan calls for work on resurfacing, striping, curbs, curb ramps, gutter, sidewalks and storm sewers, records show. ODOT is expected to fund about 80 percent of the work, and Miamisburg’s share will be about $152,000, according to city records.

“The project is necessary to maintain the roadway and improve pedestrian access,” according to ODOT records.

The corridor has a shortage of sidewalks and is one of the areas along Ohio 741 that have drawn complaints area residents. A section of the state route in Miami Twp. is also getting pedestrian upgrades.

That project — to cost $1.8 million — will improve pedestrian safety and expand access to businesses in that corridor, according to transportation officials.

It is adding asphalt and concrete paths along Lyons from Byers Road — including across the I-75 overpass — to the state route, where a sidewalk will be added on the west side across from the mall. Ohio 741 and Byers are key business corridors for the township and the city, respectively.
