Nurse’s goal of quality care for needy reaches milestone

CHOICE Health Care in Riverside, which employs 160 people, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

RIVERSIDE — Tammy Burns knows how to follow a dream.

Soon after graduating with a degree in nursing from Berea College in Kentucky, she envisioned owning a firm that would focus on quality care for the needy.

With a lot of hard work, her dream came true.

And recently, the owner of CHOICE Health Care in Riverside observed the company’s 10th anniversary with a party for employes.

Burns, a Xavier resident who was a track and cross country star at Laurel County High School in southwestern Kentucky, said, “my vision was to offer quality care based on an individual’s needs and not on corporate bottom dollar. I wanted to leave the corporate world.

“After 10 years, I feel we have achieved my goal. We are serving 600 patients in Montgomery and surrounding counties,” she said.

CHOICE Care employs 160 staffers that include RNs, LPNs, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nursing aides and clerical workers.

Other team members include speech therapists, dieticians, medical social workers, wound specialists and home health aides, plus 12 clerical staffers.

Regarding home care, she said her vision was to continue to educate the community in providing health care.

“Patients have a right to stay in their homes and receive health care if at all possible,” Burns said. “They have a right to choose their own home health agency.”

Burns and her husband, Brian, and their five children live on a 30-acre farm in Xenia.

“He loves gardening,” she said of her husband. “But he also works with me in the company.”

The five children are Dustin, 15; Brandon, 11; Erin, 8; Jake, 5; and Caleb, 10 months.

“I think word of mouth has made CHOICE Health Care a success and that’s saying a lot for her efforts,” Brian Burns said.
