“We’re just trying to make another in-person, special time for our 2020 graduates,” said Principal Paul Waller. “It’s been tough on them during the pandemic, but they’ve been optimistic and positive. And we’re going to make it a great day for them.”

The coronavirus pandemic has completely altered life for students, closing schools, canceling sports and moving graduation ceremonies online.

Despite the upheaval, Waller said most students are still on track to graduate. The school isn’t issuing new work on Wednesdays, giving students a chance to catch up on classwork and teachers time to help students who are struggling.

“I’m really proud of our teachers,” Waller said. They’ve been doing some amazing things.”

While most students are used to using computers and technology, there’s some classwork that difficult to complete virtually.

Waller cited one science teacher who dropped off kits on students’ porches so that they could still do a lab on electricity.

The school has 175 graduates this year and will graduate on May 26 via a virtual ceremony on Zoom.

Though it’s not the graduation ceremony many students and family members pictured at the start of the school year, Waller said Oakwood is incorporating many traditional aspects, including the cap and gowns and performances from students. The principal said the school is also working on getting speakers for the ceremony.

Waller also thanked the Oakwood community, board of education and others who have supported the school and students through the pandemic.

“Everyone’s been super supportive to do all we can to make it special for the class of 2020,” he said. “Because they deserve it.”
