In December, school officials explained that Traci Hummer would be acting principal at Smith Elementary, replacing Cowell, who was out on medical leave. Hummer has been the school’s counselor since August 2017.

Superintendent Kyle Ramey said Cowell has been with the district since August 2015 and “has been a wonderful addition to Oakwood Schools.”

“She will be greatly missed by students, staff and parents. We wish her well and continued support,” Ramey said.

He also praised Hummer has been performing well as acting principal.

“Traci Hummer has been doing a great job as the Smith acting principal and will continue in that role for the rest of the school year,” Ramey said. “The district will begin the search for a new Smith principal in the coming weeks.”

Paul Buford is filling the counselor role left open by Hummer’s appointment.

“Mr. Buford brings with him several years of school counseling experience at the high school level and a wealth of knowledge to facilitate the academic, career, and social-emotional learning for all kids,” Director of Educational Services Allyson Couch said.
