UPDATE @ 1:02 a.m. (Jan. 4):
Police have identified a man who was arrested after he reportedly shot at police officers then took a woman and two boys as hostages, leading to a nearly 13-hour standoff on Briarwood Avenue.
Derrick Lewis, 30, is currently facing charges including felonious assault, charges from a weapons complaint, and additional charges to be announced later.

According to Dayton Police Major Christopher Malson, the standoff began as a weapons complaint just before 11 a.m., when officers went to the 400 block of Briarwood Avenue and tried to take Lewis into custody.
Lewis then pulled a weapon and fired two shots at the officers, but police did not return fire, Malson said.
From there, according to police Lewis took the woman and two boys as hostages, which began the SWAT response.
Malson said that one of the boys was Lewis’ biological son, and both boys were the woman’s children. It is unknown whether they lived in the house or were visiting.

During the long standoff, hostage negotiators worked to try to get the suspect to release the hostages, but Malson said when children and hostages are involved SWAT units have to be very careful not to provoke some sort of violent response.
Despite this, police said that an “incident” occurred that forced SWAT to force their way into the apartment to try to save the hostages. They did not offer details of what the “incident” was, but said that the situation had escalated to the point they believed the three hostages were in imminent danger.
Once inside, Lewis and the hostages were secured without injury, Malson said, though the incident would likely be difficult for the hostages, particularly for the boys.

“It’s a very tragic situation for them, especially the children, because they don’t understand everything that’s going on,” he said. “They’re with family, but they don’t understand the danger of the situation.”
Malson added that they had a medic and psychologist on scene to care for the hostages after they were taken out of the apartment.
All in all, Malson said that this is one of the longest standoffs he has been a part of. The only one that lasted longer occurred 16 years ago, and lasted for 18 hours, he said.
The investigation will continue overnight and with new detectives today.
