TRENDING: House explosion injures 3 people, 2 critically, in Columbus
Officers responded to the 1500 block of Gelhot Drive around 6 a.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call from a woman indicating she needed help, Fairfield Police Chief Steve Maynard said.
The first Fairfield officer on the scene, identified as Officer Bryan Carnes, a three-year veteran, found a man stabbing a woman inside the townhouse.
In an attempt to stop the stabbing, Carnes fired two shots, striking the man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Maynard said.
The woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her stab wounds but later died from her injuries.
“This is a very traumatic event (for) the officers ... this is a sad day,” Maynard said.
