OSP vehicle catches fire on I-75 South near Austin Boulevard in Miami Twp.

UPDATE @ 10:10 p.m.:

A trunk fire tonight totaled a Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser on Interstate 75 South near Austin Boulevard while a trooper was on a traffic stop.

When the trooper returned to the cruiser, he saw and smelled smoke coming from the trunk.

“There was in fact a fire in the trunk,” Sgt. Matt Robinson of the patrol’s Dayton Post said. “The cause looks like it would be mechanical or electrical in nature.”

There were no injuries, and no one was in the back of the cruiser.

“The car is a total loss,” Robinson said.

FIRST REPORT

An Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser on I-75 South near Austin Boulevard in Miami Twp. caught fire tonight and a fire crew has closed the left two lanes of traffic until further notice.

The incident was reported about 9 p.m. There is no word yet whether the trooper was injured or what caused the vehicle fire.

A Miami Valley Fire District crew is on scene.
