News Center 7 and nonprofit Pay Away the Layaway teamed up again, this time for the Christmas season, to pay off holiday bills for Dayton-area families.

"It's going to free up a little money for us," said Brandi Chivers of Dayton of her husband, their three children and a niece.

Chivers said most of her layaway items consisted of clothes and coats for the children.

"I want [the children] to know miracles happen every day," she said.

News Center 7 sponsored the Monday evening Pay Away the Layaway, paying off roughly $5,000 in charges for about a dozen families.

Anchor Molly Koweek, reporters Josh Jackson and James Rider along with Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs and Emily Broughton, manager of events and community outreach for Cox Media Group Ohio, gathered at the Dayton Mall Burlington Coat Factory on Miamisburg Centerville Road to represent WHIO-TV.

In September, News Center 7 and Pay Away the Layaway paid off items for approximately 88 Dayton-area families.

The New York-based organization has a connection to the Miami Valley and Vrydaghs, whose friend is the nonprofit's founder.
