A statement released Thursday evening by the district said the accident happened during a family camping trip, not at a summer camp.
Hannah O’Leary daughter of Superintendent Rob O’Leary, was struck around 6:30 p.m. by a car that was backing up at Catholic Familyland Camp in Bloomingdale, according to CBS affiliate WTRF.
Hannah O’Leary was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Pittsburgh, where she died, the news station reported.
A teen boy was driving the car that hit the girl. Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told WTRF the young man, visiting from Virginia, was so shaken after the accident that he also was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Vandalia-Butler community took to social media Thursday to offer support to the child’s family. Butler cheerleaders issued this note:
Praying for our Superintendent Rob O’Leary and his family....may you find peace in each other’s love and your precious memories.
