Police in riot gear clear crowd of more than 1,000 on UD campus

Police from multiple departments responded to the University of Dayton campus on Lowes Street after a report of a crowd of more than 1,000 people gathered late Tuesday and would not disperse when ordered to do so.

Police eventually cleared the crowds on Lowes Street, and students went back into their housing around 2:15 a.m.

University of Dayton officials said in a statement, “A large disorderly crowd that grew to more than 1,000 people gathered on Lowes Street starting around 11 p.m., throwing objects and bottles in the street and at police, and jumping on cars. Police gave verbal orders to disperse which were ignored. Police initially launched pepper balls, which contain powder with an irritant that disperses quickly, that were unsuccessful in reducing the crowd size. About 2:15 a.m., UD police and additional Dayton police again gave orders to disperse and moved to clear the street, which was effective in dispersing the crowd quickly. At least one person was reportedly injured by a thrown bottle.”

Video taken of the scene posted to Twitter showed a large crowd of people and police moving down the street.

Police crews in riot gear were in the area, as well as fire trucks and medics staged in a nearby parking lot.

Our photographer also reported that lots of glass and debris on Lowes Street, but that had been cleaned up by about 7 a.m.
