Man tells 9-1-1 he was cleaning handgun when he shot himself accidentally

UPDATE @ 8:07 p.m.: A man who shot himself in the leg accidentally chided himself for what happened, but quickly won the sympathy of a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

"My gun misfired while I was cleaning it," the Richmond Avenue resident told the Montgomery County 9-1-1 dispatcher.

"I took it apart 'cause I go shooting a lot and there was one in the head and I didn't realize it. And I accidentally shot myself in the leg."

The man said he goes to the shooting range four times a week and should have been more careful.

"Gun safety 101. I'm an idiot," he said.

The dispatcher quickly responded, "You're not the first one who's done it."

A medic unit arrived minutes later and took him Grandview Medical Center. His condition is not known.

INITIAL REPORT

A male who reportedly shot himself accidentally has been taken to Grandview Medical Center, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

Police and a medic unit were dispatched to Richmond Avenue about 6:20 p.m. on a report of a gunshot victim.

According to regional dispatch, the male reportedly was cleaning a weapon when he was hit by gunfire. He was hit in the side.

His condition is not known.
