Eighteen years ago, after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Americans were assigned a mission: “Never forget.” The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base community will respond to that call with the sixth annual Run for the Fallen.

The event will be Sept. 11, starting at 8 a.m., and feature a 5K run and a 2K walk. It is free and open to Wright-Patterson military and civilian personnel, as well as their families. A new route this year will establish more exact running distances and easier parking. The run will start at the corner of C Street and Loop Road in Area B.

This year, the Run for the Fallen has been approved as an 88th Air Base Wing alternate-duty location. It is sponsored by the Company Grade Officer Council, which is teaming with Wright-Patterson Fitness and Sports.

Before gathering at the starting line, participants will join for a ceremony to honor those who lost their lives due to the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

“This is the base’s response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” said 1st Lt. Brett Peterson. “We are pretty far behind the front lines here at Wright-Patt. So it’s good to stay connected to why we’re serving in the Air Force.”

The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard will perform a flag posting, and a speaker will open the ceremony. After the national anthem, the run will commence.

Patriotic or unit morale attire are encouraged. Water and fruit will be provided.

Parking will be available in the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center lots.

Runners can register online at runsignup.com/Race/OH/Dayton/RunfortheFallenWPAFB. Registration closes Sept. 10. The CGOC asks runners to fill out their waivers online before arriving at the event.

“It’s easy to get caught up with your every day job. So this event a really great opportunity to take a moment and reflect with everyone else and remind ourselves of why we do what we do,” said 1st Lt. Malia Stephens.
