Fire Chief: South Charleston house is “a total loss” after heavy fire damage

UPDATE @ 5:15 a.m.:

The house that caught fire in South Charleston this morning is likely a “total loss,” Madison Twp. Fire Chief Christopher Clark said.

When crews arrived on the scene, smoke and fire were showing and fire was burning through the roof, Clark said.

The cold weather caused difficulty for the crews that responded to the blaze. Cold weather can lead to hypothermia, especially after getting sprayed with water. Low temperatures also led to slick patches of the road. Clark said that some firefighters had slipped and fallen, but nobody was injured.

The fire was likely caused by a space heater, Clark said, but it was too early to say for sure.

A 14-year-old child was the only one present in a house that caught fire on East Jamestown Street this morning.

The child was not injured, but was checked for smoke inhalation before he was released to his parents, who were at work at the time of the fire.

Crews on the scene were working to contain the rest of the fire.

The house neighboring the first house received some damage, our crew on the scene said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
