2 injured in 4-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on I-75 South in Vandalia

UPDATE @ 9:05 p.m.: Two people on a Piqua City Schools bus were injured Friday afternoon in a chain-reaction crash involving the bus, two semitrailers and a pickup truck on I-75 South in Vandalia, said Lt. Mark Nichols, Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Both victims were on the bus, one of whom was a woman who had to be extricated. She was flown to Miami Valley Hospital, Lt. Nichols said. A man on the bus was taken to a hospital by ground ambulance.

Both suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries, Lt. Nichols said.

No students were on the bus, a Piqua City Schools representative said.

Troopers said their preliminary investigation showed that a semi slowed to avoid an unrelated crash, which had been moved off onto the shoulder of the interstate. The bus was not able to stop in time and rear-ended the semi. A second semi then rear-ended the school bus. The pickup truck was involved in the chain-reaction also, Lt. Nichols said.

The crashes shut down the southbound lanes just south of the Miami-Montgomery county line.

All lanes were reopened just after 4:30 p.m., more than two hours after the school bus-semitrailer crash was reported.
