Police: Woman killed in Dayton home hit by shots fired from outside residence

A woman killed inside a house in the 2800 block of Millicent Avenue in Dayton was hit by shots fired from outside the residence, police said.

La’Peetra Dawson, 37, was shot just before midnight.

“Upon arrival crews located a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim unfortunately succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” police Lt. Jason Hall said.

“A preliminary investigation by Dayton Police homicide detectives revealed several rounds had been fired from outside the house striking the victim, who was inside.”

In a 911 call obtained by this news organization, a neighbor told dispatchers there was a lot of commotion outside.

“It looks like a whole bunch of people running down the street screaming,” the caller said.

An autopsy has been performed by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. The results were not immediately available.

WHIO-TV discovered coverage from News Center 7 archives about Darnell Wilson, identified as Dawson’s longtime boyfriend, who was gunned down in November 2009. News Center 7 coverage depicted grieving loved ones, including Dawson.

Wilson’s homicide is listed as a cold case, according to the state attorney general’s website.

Police investigators said they do not believe Wilson’s and Dawson’s deaths are connected, Campbell reports, just a cruel coincidence.

Police investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP or the Dayton Police Department at 937-333-COPS.
