Two Dayton-area liquor stores will sell a special, limited-release bottling of WhistlePig rye whiskey on Friday, Feb. 7.

The release, scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, is the third in a four-part series of WhistlePig rye whiskeys that Ohio Division of Liquor Control representatives and WhistlePig Master Blender Pete Lynch selected for the Ohio market. The, yes, “Spicy Pig” and “Smooth Pig” have already been sold, and this Friday’s release is of the “Rich Pig,”  aged for 11 years and bottled at 120 proof.

The whiskeys will be sold at Fine Wine & True Spirits, 6080 Wilmington Pike in Sugarcreek Twp., and at Arrow Wine & Spirits Far Hills Avenue store in Kettering. Each store will have 60 bottles to sell. The price is $99.99 a bottle.

Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield also will sell 60 bottles, and Cappy’s Wine & Spirits in Loveland will have 54 bottles available.

Still to come, next month, is the “Sweet Pig” from WhistlePig. The details and participating stores have not been announced for that release yet. Arrow and Fine Wine & True Spirits are two of only 20 stores statewide identified in an Ohio Division of Liquor  Control release as receiving the WhistlePig “Rich Pig” bottling.

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control describes the Rich Pig as showing “hints of maple syrup, dark chocolate, and wonderful baking spices, with a hint of tropical fruits. The finish is long and oaky, with caramel and a pleasant spice. On the nose, toasted oak, lemon zest and grapefruit mingle with soft notes of vanilla.”

The special release is part of the Ohio Division of Liquor Control’s efforts under Superintendent Jim Canepa to raise Ohio’s game in sales of spirits, with an increasing focus on educating consumers about craft spirits and adding new stores in under-served areas.
