Shots fired call in Springfield involves 2 men exchanging gunfire, police say

UPDATE @ 8:32 p.m.: Two men who residents said were firing weapons at each other are in custody and police are working to find out what touched off the gun play, Springfield police Sgt. David Emmel said.

Calls from residents brought several police officers to the 1400 block of Woodward Avenue, he said.

One man was firing at the house, the other was firing at the man in the street. Emmel said the early investigation indicates the man in the street fired at least three of four times. Police are continuing to investigate how many shots the man in the house managed to fire off.

Police have recovered one of the weapons, the sergeant said, and they're awaiting a search warrant for the house so they can look for the other weapon.

The situation involving a shots fired call in Springfield and a man who refused to come out of a house on Woodward Avenue has ended.

Police have taken the man into custody. We're working to learn more details.

INITIAL REPORT

Several Springfield police officers are on the scene of an apparent shots fired incident on Woodward Avenue.

We're hearing police have been dispatched to a house on Woodward about 5:40 p.m. involving a man who is refusing to come out.

He is believed to have been involved in firing a weapon at another man. At last check, his mother was asking him to come out of the house and surrender to police.
