Summer Music Games DCI competition to attract thousands

Annual Fairfield marching band fundraiser July 12 includes a dozen performance groups.

FAIRFIELD — The Summer Music Games drum and bugle corps show is expected to attract thousands of spectators.

The competition on Monday, July 12, the biggest annual fundraiser for the Fairfield High School marching band, is part of the Drum Corps International Tour. The gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the competition starting at 7 p.m.

“We’re just really excited to have another great show,” said Darren Ling, Fairfield’s band director. “It’s something that has to be seen in order for people to appreciate everything that’s going on. These are musical athletes. These kids practice eight to 10 hours a day out in the hot sun.”

Drum and bugle corps is a competitive choreographed musical show staged on a football field. The Summer Music Games tour is a series of more than 100 events across North America. Every summer, each of the world-class performing units, which comprise Drum Corps International will travel up to 10,000 miles, performing in stadium venues across the U.S. The performances are judged on general effect, music and visual elements.

Corps include: Bluecoats (Canton), Boston Crusaders (Boston, Mass.), Blue Stars (LaCrosse, Wis.), Phantom Regiment (Rockford, Ill.), Crossmen (San Antonio), Teal Sound (Thomasville, Ga.), Legends (Portage, Mich.) and Cincinnati Tradition (Cincinnati).

“We have a great lineup of corps,” said Bruce Brown, who is coordinating Fairfield’s event. “It’s a family friendly event.”

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of new indoor and outdoor musical instruments for Fairfield bands, Ling said.

Advanced purchase ticket prices are $18, $14, $10; gate prices are $20, $16 and $12. For tickets, call (513) 858-3786. Shuttles are provided throughout the evening from Fairfield High School’s parking lot, 8800 Holden Blvd., to the stadium located off Ohio 4.
