MIDDLETOWN — SunCoke Energy will begin accepting applications Monday for hourly worker positions at its new Middletown plant.

The hourly positions include product technicians, utility technicians and machine operators. Individuals can pick up an application at their local job center, such as Workforce One of Butler County, or apply online at workforceoneofbutlercounty.com.

According to Paula Polyak, SunCoke hiring manager, applicants must submit a resume along with their application or SunCoke will not consider them for employment. In addition, applicants for the product technician position must have a stationary engineer license.

“SunCoke will notify applicants by e-mail or U.S. mail if they have been selected to continue the application process, which will take several months to complete,” Polyak said in a statement. “The process involves several rounds of assessment tests, which Miami University Middletown and Butler Tech will administer.”

Applications will be accepted through Feb. 10, according to SunCoke. SunCoke is on schedule to begin operations in September.

SunCoke Energy is building a $360 million coke oven facility in Middletown off of Yankee Road. Once complete, the plant will produce coke — a steelmaking raw material — and capture steam to produce electricity. These resources will be sold to AK Steel Corp. for at least the next 20 years.

On-the-job paid training will be over the summer at a date to be determined, Polyak said. The plan is to conduct training by taking groups to sister locations while other groups stay on location in Middletown. Most training will be at sister-site Haverhill Coke Co., Ohio, and possibly at other locations such as Granite City, Ill., and Indiana Harbor, she said.

Wages will be determined, as Polyak said they want the wages to be competitive with the market.

To handle the flow of customers in Hamilton County, the SuperJobs Center at 1916 Central Parkway in Cincinnati will offer application sessions at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Jan. 14, 19, 21 and 26.

Workforce One of Butler County is located at 4631 Dixie Highway in Fairfield.

SunCoke accepted about 300 applications for managers and supervisors from Nov. 22 to Dec. 22, 2010. SunCoke expects to hire a total about 110 people, roughly 14 supervisors and 80 hourly workers, by the time it begins operations, Polyak said.

Polyak expects much more applications for hourly positions. She said a job fair is planned in the next few weeks somewhere in the Middletown area. The first round of testing for supervisors is underway at Miami University Middletown and the second round is scheduled to start Jan. 17 at Butler Tech, she said.

“We just ask for patience and understanding with that process,” Polyak said.
