Teens huffing freon to get high

It is fast becoming the latest trend to get high.

Teenagers are now inhaling Freon, the gas found in air conditioning systems and sometimes with fatal consequences.

On web sites like YouTube, you will find video after video of teens experimenting by inhaling the coolant commonly found in air conditioning systems. Freon causes a rapid high that can cause dangerous side effects.

"The most serious one is death," said Dr. Tom Krzmarzick of Dayton Children's Medical Center.

Gail Henry knows that heartbreakingly well.  Her son Jacob, an 18-year-old college student, was found dead next to an air conditioning unit with a bag over his head.  She said he was huffing Freon.

"Huffing affects everybody in your family and all your friends because when it does kill - you have to live on," said Henry.

The American Association of Poison Control said Freon huffing killed at least two teenagers in 2009 and more than 2,000 were treated in hospitals for the effects of Freon huffing.

Freon can literally cause your lungs to freeze and frostbite your airway.  It causes brain damage and sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Krzmarzick said, "That rush or that high feeling they get for a few seconds is actually very dangerous."

Employees of local air conditioning companies say they have sometimes suspected Freon theft from customers' units that were low on refrigerant.

Freon locks could be a life saver.  Your air conditioning service person can install them on your compressor at a low cost.  The owner or service person uses a key to access the unit.

The coolant is being phased out and though the replacement is more friendly to the environment, it is just a potentially dangerous to those who choose to huff it.

"Either way, they can both be lethal or toxic if you breathe them," said George Brockman, a Dayton area air conditioning specialist.

Gail Henry is warning teens about the dangers of huffing Freon or any chemical.

"Don't ever considering doing it because that five seconds of high you get when you do it, isn't worth dying over,"  Henry said.

She is also urging homeowners and business owners to install Freon locks on their air conditioning units.
