Influenced by the worldwide twerk movement and Instagram posts by reality TV star Kim Kardashian, the queen of all butt-related media, butt selfies (AKA booty selfies, belfies or in England, pictures of one’s own arse most likely taken with a cellular device), have regretfully taken the information super highway by storm in recent months.
Here are three things you need to know about butt selfies:
1) The birth of a word
The Daily Dot breaks down the brief by buttylicious history of the butt selfie from sexy to silly in an article that trace the 'word' used way back to 2012 when Instagram user buchikk posted a picture of her backside and hashtagged it 'buttselfie' 'idontknowwhattohashtag" and several other things.
It was a day that will forever haunt us.
2) It has its own ‘gate’
Kardashian threw wood on the fire when she posted a photo of herself and butt barely covered in a white swimming suit in October.
There is speculation that Kardashian photoshopped her recent butt selfie taken with friend Blac Chyna. I am calling the scandal Butt Selfie-gate.
3) Belfies can be sporty
Not all butt selfies are controversial.
Jen Selter is using the 'art-form' for good and it is seemingly paying off.
Yoga pants and a plump keister have helped gain the fitness motivator nearly a half million Facebook friends and more than 1.6 million Instagram follower, including singer Rihanna and former football player Terrell Owens.
The butt selfie expert told Elle magazine that she gets four to five thousand new Instagram followers with every new derriere pic.
"I don't really go to public gyms anymore just because it is a whole big scene when I'm there," the 20-year-old told the New York Post. "I don't like being watched."
4)You can sing to it
The spoof song "Belfies Are Selfies Of Your Butt (Bon Iver Song) by PoliSub promotes the use of the word
belfies and the taking and tagging of said pictures.
5) It could be going places
