1 in hospital, 5 in custody after rear-end crash turns to assault

UPDATE @ 3:40 a.m.:

One person is in the hospital and five people were taken into custody after a rear-end crash early this morning at Tuttle Avenue and South Smithville Road, according to Dayton Police.

A police sergeant said that it appeared that first a Kia sedan with five people inside rear-ended another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle got out to confront the people in the Kia, at which point police said people from the Kia got out and attacked him.

That man has been taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

The people then got back into the Kia and fled from the scene, but the smoking car was spotted by police and caught off of Second Street.

Police said that they took five people into custody: 3 males and 2 females.

Police have three people detained after responding to a reported injury crash near the intersection of Tuttle Avenue and South Smithville Road, according to dispatch records.

The crash was reported at 1:47 a.m., and police reported that one car had rear-ended another.

Scanner traffic indicated that one of the vehicles may have tried to flee the scene.
