In addition to the sidewalk, the project includes storm drainage, curbs, gutters, a retaining wall with railing and minor repairs on Valley Street, according to Director of Public Service Kathy Bartlett.
The total cost of the project is $367,506. The city will cover about 25 percent of that cost and about $275,630 will be covered by the Safe Routes to School funding that the city received.
The city applied for the funding to improve the safety for students who walk to Stebbins High School, located on Harshman Road.
The SRTS program was established by the Department of Transportation and started in Ohio in 2008 to encourage and enable students in grades kindergarten through eighth to walk or ride their bicycle to school, according to their website.
The project was awarded to LJ DeWeese Co., Inc., based in Tipp City.
City officials say the project is scheduled to be completed on or before Sept. 15. The contractor will be clearing trees next week, and most of the construction will occur May through August, Bartlett said.
The city plans to pave six residential streets this year, as well.
