“Any time we lose a child for any reason, at any age, it is tragic,” Superintendent Ben Richards said Thursday.

Bryston Keating was with his father in West Virginia on Tuesday when he was in the accident involving the UTV, a four-wheel drive off-road vehicle.

Bryston died of his injuries early Thursday morning, Richards said.

“We stand by the Keating family during this tragic time and hold them in our hearts,” said a post on the school district’s Facebook page. “... Take care of one another as we assist the family and one another during this time.”

A prayer vigil for Bryston was held at the school district Wednesday night.

Community members wrote messages for Bryston on ribbons and tied them to poles, Richards said.

Both of the boy’s parents were Valley View students and still have ties to the district. His mother teaches high school math and his father is an assistant football coach and also teaches in Oakwood.

Bryston was an incoming second-grader at Valley View and played soccer and baseball. He also participated in 4-H.

His death “deeply affects the community to its core,” Richards said. “The community will rally around itself and the Keating family.”

The superintendent said the community has already started to show its support for the family and has started a meal train.
