The city of Vandalia has decided to rename the Vandalia Recreation Center after Bruce Sucher, a long-time community leader and the acting city manager when the rec center was opened in 2001.

Bruce Sucher died unexpectedly last March at a University of Dayton basketball game.

Sucher worked for the city as a police officer and later as police chief. He also became city manager, and he eventually was the president of the Board of Education for the Vandalia-Butler City Schools.

He was a star basketball athlete at Fairview High School in Dayton and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he received his undergraduate degree. Sucher received his master’s degree at Xavier University in Cincinnati and he was an avid UD fan.

To honor his legacy, someone wrote a nomination for Sucher that included why he deserved to have a city building named after him. Then, it went to the city council for approval.

On April 19, the Vandalia Recreation Center will be dedicated and renamed in honor of Sucher for all his contributions to the city.
