Vandalia-Butler City Schools will consider plans to put the former Murlin Heights Elementary site up for auction at the school board meeting on Tuesday.

Vandalia-Butler schools announced that they would close the elementary school building in 2012. The building was demolished in 2018. The site of the former elementary is about 15 acres at 8515 North Dixie Drive. Vandalia-Butler City Schools has determined that they no longer need the property.

The closing of the school was part of the district’s two-year, about $7 million cost reduction plan.

The school district says the site was appraised at $1.2 million. If the legislation is approved, Superintendent Robert O’Leary and Treasurer Eric Beavers will advertise the site for sale by auction. If necessary, the district could sell the land in a private sale, too.

The Vandalia-Butler Board of Education meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Board of Education room on Tuesday.
