Veterans event planned at historic cemetery

MIDDLETOWN — A local board hopes an event meant to remember veterans also will remind people of the repairs needed at a historic cemetery.

The Middletown Cemetery Board is sponsoring a special Memorial Day event May 28 to commemorate the 238 veterans buried at the Middletown Cemetery on First Avenue. Boy Scout Troop 572 will mark each veteran’s grave with an American flag, said Debra Morrison, a cemetery board member.

The Middletown Combined Honor Guard also will assist with the raising of the American and POW flags at the cemetery, Morrison said.

“We invite the public to come out and participate in the event and watch the Boy Scouts mark the graves,” Morrison said. “They can also leave flowers.”

Cemetery board members will be volunteering time and supplies to spruce up the cemetery May 21. Armbruster Florist Inc. will donate flowers to be planted in the beds near the entrance, said board member Josh Toms.

The board plans to pass out information about the cemetery, including a list of the veterans buried there. They are hoping to raise awareness about the state of the cemetery and solicit donations, said board Chairman Michael McNeil.

The board has been focusing its efforts on grant applications to raise funds for the dilapidated vault. A Middletown Community Foundation grant for $15,000 to repair the vault requires the board to provide a $20,000 match.

McNeil said that while the board is considering a master plan to address all the maintenance issues at Middletown Cemetery, the priority is the vault. The board has until November to raise the funds in order to meet the community foundation’s deadline for the grant.

The next Middletown Cemetery Board meeting will be at 5 p.m. May 11 in conference room 2C at the city building, One Donham Plaza.
