Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon, famously saying: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The street in front of the 1904 Wapa Theatre, 15 Willipie St., was closed, for the event.

The gala, with Armstrong’s sister in attendance, was a fundraiser that kicks off a nine-month celebration in Wapakoneta leading to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969.

“First Man” opens Friday in movie theaters across the country.
