$1.7M Warren County Airport expansion begins

TURTLECREEK TWP. — Construction is under way on a $1.7 million expansion to the Warren County airport that will add three new hangars to the airport by the end of the summer.

The Warren County Airport is expanding to take in many of the planes and local aviation-related business orphaned by the closing of Blue Ash’s airport, scheduled for June.

Airport co-owner Bob Henderson said the airport will be adding three new hangars, plus a new office building and additional taxiing space by the end of this summer. Crews are already working on the first of the three planned hangars, which will house the Flying Neutrinos, a private flying club that had been based at the Blue Ash airport.

“We’re not trying to turn this into a big fancy airport, but it will be a good airport for small business and private flyers,” said Bill Simmons, president of the Warren County Aviation Authority.

“I think it will be a good drawing card for the area,” Henderson said. “People move to where they play and work. We can attract more private flyers and businesses who want to land at a small airport.”

The airport’s plane capacity will expand from 90 planes to up to 140, Henderson said. The airport will adopt the Blue Ash flight school, to go along with several other businesses that operate out of the airport, including the Warren County Career Center’s Aviation School, Gentle Breeze Hot Air Balloon, Sky Dive Warren County and a hangar for Miami Valley Hospital CareFlight.

The Warren County Airport sits on 120 acres off Greentree Road, northwest of Lebanon. The airport is privately owned while the land it sits on is owned by the county. No taxpayer money is being used for the expansion.

Henderson said the first of the new hangers should be completed by next week.

A two-year plan also is in place to increase the size of the runway to make it up to code with Federal Aviation Administration standards, Henderson said.
