West Chester family involved with latest ‘Extreme Makeover’ project

Akers say novelty of being on ABC network show still hasn't worn off.

BEAVERCREEK — It’s been more than a year since the Akers family walked into their” Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” house July 17, 2008.

The Southwest Ohio community rallied together to build the West Chester Twp. family a handicap-accessible home for its two daughters, Brooke, 9 and Faith, 5, who have Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Now, the Akers are joining in with the festivities of building another area family a home in Beavercreek.

“It has been so much fun,” Ginger Akers said. “We don’t want to leave at night.”

The family, which still is recognized throughout the Cincinnati area, also has been popular up in Dayton and with the designers who remembered them from last season.

“When we met, Ed (Sanders) didn’t recognize us, because we’ve both grown up and Brookie got a bigger chair,” Faith said of her Aug. 3 visit to the site.

While things have calmed down for the family, Ginger Akers said more cars started driving by recently in light of the new build in Dayton.

“It’s still hard to believe,” she said. “It’s been an amazing year. It really has. It’s still like a dream.”

Greg Akers said the best part has been the absence of stress and constant home maintenance that kept him from his family.

“With the new house, you don’t have the work and upkeep we had before, so it’s allowed me to spend time on other important things,” he said. “After being here a year, everything is much easier on us, from the obvious items of the ranch and the girls getting around in their chairs to the pool maintenance and the girls getting them in and out.”

And Christian Akers, 11, said the novelty hasn’t worn off and he has been “magically” more popular in school.

“I still feel like I haven’t been here for a year,” he said. “I still feel like it’s brand new. It’s hard to believe that last month was the day of the reveal. I feel like it was two months ago. People still are asking us if we’re the Akers family.”
