Any experienced gardener will tell you, it’s best to wait to plant your annuals, your summer flower garden, until after Mother’s Day.

But if you’re like most of us in Ohio this time of year, you’re itching to get outside and soak up the peeks of sun we see and begin preparing your flower beds.

There are some annuals you CAN plant now, even with the threat of frost. They are considered cool season annuals, according to Mark Webber, Horticulturist and Arborist, and host of Garden Talk on AM1290 News 95.7 WHIO radio Saturday mornings from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

WHAT IS SAFE TO PLANT NOW:

  • Pansies
  • Petunias
  • Dianthus
  • Sweet alyssum
  • Snapdragons
  • Marigolds

These are considered cold season annuals.

  • Woody shrubs and trees
  • Perennials

WAIT TO PLANT UNTIL AFTER MAY 15:

  • Impatiens
  • Geraniums
  • Begonias

These are considered warm season annuals.
