The World Health Organization has supported WNTD since 1987, which is now celebrated annually around the globe on the last day in May. This year, WNTD focusses on “tobacco and lung health.”

The 2019 WNTD campaign raises awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease.

Research shows that many people underestimate the specific ways smoking tobacco can damage their bodies. Tobacco smoke contains more than 6,000 chemicals and between 60 and 300 carcinogens.

Its strain on health takes an economic toll on families, businesses and government too, costing the U.S. about $170 billion in health care expenditures and more than $150 billion in lost productivity each year. For more information, visit https://www.who.int/tobacco/wntd/en/.

Quitting tobacco is tough, but kicking the habit will save individual and family health. The base community is invited to join celebrate World No Tobacco Day and use the opportunity to say no to tobacco.
