6-year-old boy dies following ATV crash in Mercer County

A 6-year-old boy died after he was thrown from and trapped beneath an all-terrain vehicle that overturned in Recovery Twp. in Mercer County Monday evening, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded to a field west of state Route 49 near Park Road around 7:38 p.m.

Sawyer D. Overman, 6, was driving down a gravel road in a 2011 Polaris Ranger with his 8-year-old brother when the ATV went off the side of the road.

Overman over-corrected, lost control of the ATV and went off the left side of the gravel road, according to the sheriff’s deputy.

The ATV overturned, ejecting Overman and then trapping him under the ATV.

His 8-year-old brother freed himself from the ATV and went for help, according to the sheriff’s office.

Adults attempted to resuscitate Overman until St. Henry EMS arrived. The boy was transported to Mercer Health in Coldwater and pronounced dead shortly after.

The 8-year-old was taken to Mercer Health and treated for minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

St. Henry EMS and the Fort Recovery Fire Department assisted deputies in the incident.
