The Dayton area has escaped the first round of department store closures in 2019.

Department stores have struggled amid changing consumer habits where smaller format stores, discount options and online shopping prevail. Some like Bon-Ton stores have gone out of business completely. Others, including Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom and JCPenney, have announced plans to close stores this year to try and balance their real estate portfolios and boost earnings.

The four stores combined have announced plans to close nearly 20 stores this year, but no area stores have been effected so far, aside from the Sears stores already planned to close.

JCPenney will close at least three stores this spring, with more to follow, it announced earlier this year. No details are known yet about which JCPenney stores will shut down.
