Laura Nirider, Brendan Dassey’s post-conviction attorney, will present “A True Story of a False Confession” at 5 p.m., Feb. 22 in Sears Recital Hall of the Jesse Phillips Humanities Building at UD. The event is free and open to the public but seating will be limited, according to the university.
Dassey’s conviction in “Making A Murderer” sparked outrage among viewers of the Netflix documentary.
While being interrogated, Dassey implicated himself and his uncle, Steven Avery, in the 2005 killing of photographer Teresa Halbach; he later recanted that confession. Dassey was given a life sentence with parole eligibility in 2048.
In August, a federal judge ordered Dassey’s release. The judge ruled investigators made false promises and took advantage of Dassey’s age and intellectual deficiencies to coerce a confession.
