It does not appear the Dayton man fired shots before the Miamisburg police officer wounded him, which prompted “quite a few” officers to respond from cities that are part of the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit, said John Davis of the Centerville Police Department.
“As far as we can tell, he did not,” fire a weapon, Davis said of the suspect.
Since late October, police officers from Miamisburg, Moraine and Miami Twp. (twice) have shot suspects with two of them suffering fatal wounds. Tuesday night’s incident was the second law enforcement shooting in the Ohio 725/I-75 since February.

“I don’t know that there’s really any rhyme or reason among any of them,” Miamisburg Police Chief John Sedlak said Wednesday about the four police-involved shootings in the past six months.
“As far as the 75/725 connection,” he added, “a lot of times certain types of crimes will occur close to an interstate because the persons doing those crimes are looking for a fast get-away.”
The officer who shot the suspect is now on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol, Sedlak said.

On Tuesday night, an officer yelled “shots fired, shots fired,” at 6:32 p.m., police records show.
A signal 99 indicating an officer in distress went out, and Miamisburg police requested assistance from the tactical unit, whose members include Centerville, Germantown, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood, Springboro and West Carrollton.
“It was a big scene and had a lot going on,” Davis said.

The Dayton man was wounded “at least once” with non-life threatening injuries in an undisclosed area, Davis said. On Wednesday afternoon the suspect continued to receive treatment at a hospital, he said.
Authorities hope on Thursday to charge the suspect, Davis said.
Davis said detectives from Dearborn County, Indiana, were looking for the man, believed to have committed an armed robbery there.

Indiana officers tracked him here, learned he rented a room and asked Miamisburg officers for help making the arrest. But they ran out of time, Davis said.
“As they were coming up with that plan, the subject came out of the room unexpectedly,” he said. “So when they went to take the subject down, a foot pursuit ensued, they chased him through the hotel area, to the south end of the hotel, the subject turned on the officer, brandished a firearm and the officer fired on him.”
One of the officers on scene indicated no law enforcement had been wounded. Police also noted the wounded suspect was “still breathing” and “hands are up,” records show.

Tuesday night’s wounding of a robbery suspect from Dayton was the fourth police-involved shooting in the south suburbs in the past six months and the second one near the Ohio 725/Interstate 75 interchange since February.
Two of the shootings – both early morning incidents – were deadly.
The first occurred on Oct. 20 shortly before dawn in Moraine. MPD officers John Howard and Jerry Knight fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Jamarco McShann, who was in a parked car outside an apartment complex. Police said the 23-year-old Dayton man failed to comply with orders to drop a gun he had pointed at the officers.

The family of McShann filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit on March 20. After an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, on March 27 a Montgomery County grand jury decided not to charge the officers.
The second deadly shooting occurred on Dec. 20 shortly after midnight. Miami Twp. officer James McCarty fatally shot Miami Twp. resident Robert Edwards, 33, at his home in Oakwood Village, police said.
Police responded to Edwards’ home after a 911 caller said he had a gun and expressed concern for his safety. McCarty fired at Edwards after police said the man did not comply with orders to drop his weapon, later determined to be a BB gun.

No grand jury decision has been announced on possible criminal charges.
Law enforcement authorities said a Feb. 5 shooting of a 17-year-old robbery suspect from Dayton by an off-duty Miami Twp. police officer helped defuse a potentially dangerous situation.
Police said the teen suspect was fleeing a gas station on Byers Road in Miamisburg where he had just committed an armed robbery. Miami Twp. Officer James Swearingen saw the suspect attempting to carjack vehicles along Ohio 725 and wounded him in the arm when the teen failed to drop his weapon, police said.
