Myers gets death sentence

Jury recommendation followed in spike murder of woman

Convicted murderer David Lee Myers was sentenced to death Friday for the railroad spike death of Amanda Jo Maher.

And finally after 7 1/2 years, Mahers family said they have found some solace.

Although Judge M. David Reid of Greene County Common Pleas Court set a May 1 execution date for Myers, county Prosecutor William F. Schenck predicted it will take 10 to 12 years for Myers to complete the appeals process.

Last week a jury recommended death for Myers, 31, after convicting him of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in Mahers 1988 death.

Maher, a mother of one, was 18, pregnant and living in Caesarscreek Twp. Myers strangled Maher and drove a railroad spike through her temple near some abandoned railroad tracks in Xenia. He also stole wallets from her.

Reid sentenced Myers to 10 to 25 years in prison on the robbery conviction.

"Knowing that he has to pay for what he did to Mandy makes us feel better," the victims grandmother, Alice Maher, said afterward, reading from a family statement. "The brutality of Mandys murder and David Myers total lack of remorse has convinced us that he is an evil, dangerous man."

Myers family and his attorney, William Summers, said the wrong man was convicted. Summers said an appeal is certain.

Myers showed no emotion when Reid announced his sentence, and he was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.

Outside, his sister, Freda Chambliss, said Myers has shown no remorse because he did not commit the murder.

"Let me say, everyone in Greene County be careful because there is a killer loose," Chambliss said.

Myers will be the third person sentenced from Greene County on death row.

The others are David Brewer, 36, convicted in 1985 of murdering Sherry Byrne, 21; and Richard Bays, 30, convicted last year of murdering Charles Weaver, 76.
