UPDATE @ 10:07 p.m.: The new coaster is called Mystic Timbers, the 16th at the park and the fourth wooden coaster, that opens in April.

It will feature 3,265 feet of track and reach 109 feet in height. Its features include an “extreme S turn” and weave along steep cliffs, down ravines, cross over water and go through a forest of trees, all at speeds up to 53 mph.

The thousands who gathered at the park were shown a video walk up to the announcement before the name was released.

Mystic Timbers, themed to an area surrounding a lumber company becoming overrun by a mysterious medusa-like overgrowth of vines as nature reclaims its land, will feature 16 airtime hills, a mid-course tunnel and interact with parts of the Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad and White Water Canyon attractions.

Greg Scheid, the park’s vice president and general manager, said, “Mystic Timbers is naturally exciting because of its setting in a densely wooded area. The natural rugged terrain and tunnel ensures a unique and memorable ride experience.”

Three trains will accommodate 24 passengers each with a capacity of 1,200 riders per hour. Guests must be at least 48 inches tall to ride the attraction, which will last more than two minutes.

It was the first of two major announcements regarding the park for this season.

“We prefer to tease it a little bit,” he said. Details about the other announcement will come in August.

UPDATE @ 2:35 p.m.: We sent a crew member to King's Island in search of clues to the new attraction being unveiled tonight at the park.

Our videographer Jarod Thrush discovered new signs posted at the fence line of the project asking “What’s lurking in the woods?” The park’s website also

has a banner stating “Nature is Taking Over.”

Construction appears to have begun in a wooded area behind the park’s log ride “Race for Your Life Charlie Brown.”

We will be at tonight’s unveiling and bring you the breaking news immediately on this site.

EARLIER REPORT:

Last month, it was revealed the 364-acre amusement and waterpark had filed a blueprint with the Mason planning division for a new roller coaster.

The plans — which say “Kings Island Project 2017” — show the new attraction drawn in a corner of the Rivertown section of the park. Permits were approved June 6.

The Rivertown section of Kings Island is the same area that is home to The Beast, Diamondback, White Water Canyon and the Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad.

New attraction animation videos and renderings will be unveiled tonight.
