Boehner, Portman back Obama on missile attacks

Sen. Rob Portman, and House Speaker John Boehner backed President Barack Obama’s decision last night to order cruise missile attacks and air strikes against Islamic State militant targets in Syria and Iraq.

“These targeted airstrikes are an important step toward our ultimate goal of degrading and defeating the terrorist group,” Portman, R-Ohio, said. “I’ve been calling on the President to take action and now that the U.S. is moving forward with a military plan, it’s crucial that we have the resolve to see it through to the end.”

Declaring that Islamic State militants are a “direct threat to the safety and security” of the U.S., Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., said he backs the air strikes as well, although he added “that this is just one step in what must be a larger effort to destroy and defeat this terrorist organization.”

Obama telephoned Boehner Monday night to advise him of the air strikes.
