An Alabama couple is behind bars in connection with the death of a 2-year-old boy, authorities said.

According to AL.com, Demetric Hampton Jr., 2, was pronounced dead at a Birmingham hospital Wednesday after Jefferson County deputies responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a Center Point home.

"Deputies were told by the parents that the child had been eating and began choking," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

After doctors at Children's of Alabama determined that Demetric had suffered multiple injuries, Jefferson County deputies arrested the child's father, 26-year-old Demetric Hampton Sr., and stepmother, 24-year-old Terrica Harris, the Sheriff's Office said. They are being held without bond on aggravated child abuse charges, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing and could lead to more charges, according to the Sheriff's Office.
