According to WTVR, the adult went into a grocery store to shop and left the baby inside the vehicle, police sources said. Afterward, the adult drove to a Britannia Road home, where police responded to a report of an infant in distress around 2 p.m., the station reported.

The baby suffered cardiac arrest and died as crews were taking her to a nearby hospital, police sources told WWBT.

Richmond police are investigating the death but do not suspect foul play, WWBT reported.

So far this year, 21 children have died in hot cars in the U.S., according to KidsAndCars.org.
