What may seem like an innocent nod to a Halloween tradition to one person could be a truly offensive Halloween costume to others.

And this year, as "hate has a prominent spot on the national stage," CNN reported, inappropriate costume ideas, such as blackface, sombreros and the like carry more weight than ever.

In the past, Hollywood stars have made their fair share of Halloween costume faux pas.

Here’s a look at five celebrities who have had to apologize for their controversial get-ups:

Hilary Duff

Last year, Hilary Duff and now ex-boyfriend Jason Walsh donned a pilgrim and Native American chief couples costume and immediately received criticism for their culturally insensitive choices.

“It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my [heart] sorry,” Duff apologized on Twitter.

According to People, Walsh echoed Duff's statements: "I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America. In hindsight I would not have made that decision. I apologize to anyone I may have offended."

Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna

In 2015, Rinna and Hamlin dressed up as Sid and Nancy from the 1986 cult indie classic.

Hamlin truly channeled Sid Vicious’ character and donned a swastika t-shirt, sparking outrage from the public.

In response, Rinna issued an apology on Instagram.

Jason Aldean

Country singer Jason Aldean dressed in blackface and dreadlocks for his Lil Wayne costume in 2015 and people were not impressed with his delayed apology in September 2016.

In an interview with Billboard, Aldean said: “In this day and age people are so sensitive that no matter what you do, somebody is going to make a big deal out of it. Doing that had zero malicious intent ... I get that race is a touchy subject, but not everybody is that way. Media tends to make a big deal out of things. If that was disrespectful to anyone, I by all means apologize. That was never my intention. It never crossed my mind.”

Julianne Hough

In 2013, actress Julianne Hough dressed up as Uzo Aduba’s “Crazy Eyes” character in the hit Netflix show “Orange is the New Black,” and was slammed for covering her face in dark makeup.

The backlash led Hough to issue an apology on Twitter.

Colton Haynes

Actor Colton Haynes issued an apology after completely transforming himself into a different race—twice. In 2011, he painted his face black to channel Kanye West and in 2012, he painted himself brown for a Mahatma Gandhi costume.

In a streaming video chat from 2012, Haynes apologized for some of his past costume choices: "I've gotten in trouble for a few of my costumes in the past and I wasn't aware that I was offending people. That wasn't my intention at all, and I hadn't apologized for that but I want to apologize now. That will never happen again."

Haynes is notorious for going all out for Halloween costumes. This year, he dressed up as Marge Simpson and in the past, he’s transformed into Miss Piggy, Ursula and Princess Fiona from Shrek.
