More than 805 people have reportedly died worldwide from the new coronavirus, surpassing the number of those who died from the deadly 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak, CNN reported.

The first U.S. victim, a 60-year-old man, died Thursday in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak started.

The World Health Organization on Saturday started referring to the virus as NCP, novel coronavirus pneumonia.

Official figures released early Saturday show 3,399 new cases were diagnosed in the previous 24 hours, with 86 people dying in China on Friday.

More than 34,400 people spanning 28 countries and territories have tested positive for NCP.

The outbreak of SARS in 2003 affected 8,000 people and killed 774.
