Denver Zoo welcomes its first one-horned rhino calf

The Denver Zoo welcomed a new addition Saturday, and it’s a first for the facility in the Rocky Mountains.

Zoo officials announced Wednesday the birth of a female greater one-horned rhino, KDVR reported. The mother, 13-year-old Tensing, and the calf are doing well, the television station reported.

According to the zoo's animal care team, Tensing was showing "appropriate maternal behaviors," KUSA reported.

The calf has not been named yet, and she will remain out of the public eye for up to eight weeks as she bonds with Tensing. KMGH reported.

“The birth of this calf is the result of a truly heroic effort by our animal care, health and science teams and partners from other zoos to support the species,” Brian Aucone, the zoo’s senior vice president for animal sciences, said in a news release.

According to zoo officials, Tensing became pregnant in December 2018 after 11 unsuccessful artificial insemination attempts. The calf's father is Jontu, a 10-year-old from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, KMGH reported.
