Gigi’s basketball number was 2, and Kobe’s was 24; so it makes sense to have it on 2-24-2020. 💜💛 pic.twitter.com/zkw1qOlSmD
"There was conversations about possibly having the ceremony at the LA Coliseum to fit more people, but ultimately the Staples Center made the most sense as it was such a big part of Kobe's life. The date being the 24th was a decision to coincide with his jersey number as well. The day will be a way for LA to celebrate a man that meant so much to the city," an unidentified source told "ET."
Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said last week that the city was planning a memorial for Bryant and others killed in the crash but had not set a date.
No official announcement about the memorial has been made. The person who provided the information to the AP is knowledgeable about the planning and spoke only on condition of anonymity. The Los Angeles Times was first to report the event, citing two anonymous sources with knowledge of the planning.
