"If you haven't got a good dog, you can't do so much with the sheep," Hill told NBC News. "They're really difficult to move in any way, shape or form unless you have a good dog."
A team of five detection dogs from the International Fund for Animal Welfare were deployed to help sniff out koalas.
One of the dogs, Bear, has helped find 15 koalas.
"Bear is one of the few dogs in the world able to find koala by the scent of their fur, which is a real asset to find these little survivors who are hiding in the trees," Aurore Lepastourel, a spokesperson with the animal welfare group, told Global News.
The devastating fires have killed 27 people and millions of animals.
