On Monday, the company launched its new collection, which is inspired by the rapper’s chart-topping song “Old Town Road.”
In the song, the artist sings, "Cowboy hat from Gucci / Wrangler on my booty."
The limited-edition capsule collection includes denim pants, shorts, tops and T-shirts.
After Wrangler announced the news on Instagram, many expressed how excited they were to add some new items to their closet.
On the other hand, some were disappointed about the collaboration. They said the partnership was making a mockery of the country music genre and cowboy culture.
“Really? Supporting an artist that so clearly is mocking country music and the lifestyle it represents? Bad move Wrangler,” one commenter wrote.
“This makes me not want to buy wrangler jeans anymore tbh, the cowboy spirit is nothing to be made fun of,” another person said.
Another replied, “Wranglers are to be worn by cowboys and farmers not rappers this is very disappointing.”
And a few people suggested they would no longer support Wrangler. "This is how you lose customers," one other warned.
When Lil Nas X got wind of some of the criticism, he took to Twitter to respond. He posted, “y’all really boycotting wrangler?? is it that deep.”
Despite the backlash, many of the items from the collection are selling fast. The shorts are already out of stock, but Wrangler said it plans to make more.
